Trade Brady?

The over-reactionary fans in New England are at it again as the topic of trading Tom Brady has begun to arise. After a solid performance from Matt Cassel Thursday night against the Jets this discussion was inevitable. The Providence Journal even went so far as to put up a poll to gauge peoples feelings on trading Brady. As I read some people’s answers it began to infuriate me. Here is a sample of what some people had to say:

“They should do more than consider it, they should do it. If they trade him to KC or Detroit for a first round pick, they’re almost guaranteed of having a pick in the top 3! Cassel has proven to be more talented than Brady already…not better because Brady has more experience, but more talent. His stats are quickly ramping up to Brady level and he’s younger with less mileage. Move Brady for a top pick and use it to get the defense back to championship levels.”

Are you kidding me; more talented then Brady already? I mean, c’mon, this is probably the same person that was calling for Dante Culpepper a month ago and to say that his stats are comparing to Brady’s is just absurd. There are ways to improve the defense rather then trading Brady, and getting a top 3 pick isn’t going to fill all the holes they have in secondary.

“Trade Brady. What has he done for them in 2008? He lost them a Super Bowl! Goodbye Charlie.”

He lost them a Super Bowl? Admittedly I don’t really remember the last three minutes of that game but what I am sure of is that he wasn’t on the defensive side of the ball as the Giants marched down the field, he wasn’t the one who let the ball go right through his hands for an easy interception to seal the game, and its hard to throw the ball when your on the ground for most of the game.

“Tom is past his prime, just like Drew was.”

Seriously; past his prime? How can having a guy flop into your knee and blow it out put you past your prime? Does this person not remember last year when Brady and the offense broke nearly every record. Before Mo Lewis helped us win three Super Bowls by knocking out Bledsoe it was obvious his best days were behind him (even though he did have a good 2002) and Brady before this was getting better every year.

I have come to expect this kind of stuff from people in this area but it doesn’t make it any easier to read and not ask your self what are these people smoking. Matt Cassel had one great game and yes he was “Tom Brady Esque” on the drive at the end of the game. But he is not Tom Brady. There is no way the Patriots trade Brady and for people to even think its a good idea irritates me to no end.

  1. UnFUCKINGbelieveable! Only in New England are the writers jealous of the superstars, and are constantly trying to run them out of town. Someone should have been fired for that Projo poll, yet the fans vindicate it by eating it up and making ludicrous comments about Brady being done. Sure, Cassel put up big numbers in the Jet LOSS (only QB to pass for 400 yds and rush for 60+ in NFL history) but it had a lot to do with the fact that they were playing from behind all game. Lets not forget he threw 21 incompletions, Brady hasn’t thrown that many since week 3 in ’06. I’m also sick of people comparing Brady’s ’01 numbers with cassel’s this year. Yeah, they’re very similar (Brady’s are ever-so-slightly better). Brady was throwing to Brown, Patten, Wiggans, Marc Edwards, and J.R. Redmond. With Moss and Welker even I could complete half of my passes. Oh yeah, and Brady was 14-3 as a starter in ’01 with that practice squad of a team, Cassel’s 6-4. I never thought this media/fanbase could outdo themselves when it comes to QB controversies after “Bledsoe or Bishop?” but this blows that out of the water.

  2. They will never get rid of him but they should try to pay Cassel good money to be the back up just in case!!!
