In case you haven’t already done your own research, I’ve gathered all the words worth reading concerning the passing of the legendary Guru…
But, first, press play…
…and groove to Sterbyrock’s all-Guru set (and the TECB drop @ 2:40:06) on 90.3 while you’re reading…
- The controversial letter “written by GURU.” (Correct me if I’m wrong, though, but I didn’t know people in comas could write. (Solar is a piece of shart.))
- Patricia Elam’s letter to The Source in which she explains exactly what happened with Guru in his last days.
- Chris Faraone’s post about the hundreds of know-nothing’s who are writing obituary’s.
- Preem’s official statement on the death of Guru where he does a fine job of brushing off the shots fired at him in “Guru’s letter.” (However, I think Premier kicking off his tribute mix with “Betrayal” may be a little fishy. (Much like your mom.))
- Harry Elam Jr.’s very nice remembrance of his brother Guru.
- DJ Mek’s post — including various photos and audio uploads along with his story — on what Guru and the G-A-N-G S-T-A-DOUBLE-R means to him.
- And, lastly, Jon Caramanica’s write-up on the life and death of Gurizzy.
R.I.P. Guru. One of my all-time favorites.
Feel free to share your thoughts, stories, and all that…

Dude this sucks. I’ve never been genuinely upset by the passing of a famous musician before now. Gang Starr was our SHIT back in the day. They got more play on EL than anyone except maybe the Wu and they were the official soundtrack of the Knibb Rd ride. They were nicer than anyone during the greatest era in hip-hop history.
I met Guru back in ’01 or ’02 at the mall and he was exactly like you’d expect. Quiet, appreciative, laid-back, and so fucking cool. I still cherish the photo of me and Baldhead Slick mean-muggin’ in front of Borders.
after reading Preem’s words and Guru’s family’s words, I feel Solar is probably the biggest wack job in the history of wack jobs. I read from Mayer Hawthorne of all people about Guru’s coma back in Feb/March and then mum was the word since until he died. Super hush about the type of cancer and super hush about the whole situation. Like, what the fuck is this assholes deal? I got a sick-psycho-exgirlfriend type of vibe from this dood’s fake ass letter. When that s was published I hope whom ever read it first laughed in his face.
For what it’s worth…
“merk each and every faggot” – Guru
“…homo-thug network…” – Guru
the beauty of out of context ^^^^^^^
knibb road!!!
both times i saw guru in concert were insane.
you guys remember when moment of truth came out? we were all so shook. in awe. it was some of the best shit we had ever heard. still is.
Remember that summer when some public access station decided to just show like 10 rap videos 24 hrs a day? 3 of which were Militia, You Know my Steez, and Royalty
ha, yeah, that’s what i’m talking about. “twinz” and “4 alarm blaze” always seemed to be in steady rotation, too.
Cot Damn Mang. He will always be the nicest. Just listening to this brings back so many memories. Full Clip was stuck in my CD player since the day I copped it (day of Sr. Prom) ’til the night I wrapped my car around a fire hydrant. (Night of Aaron Bleepin Boone.) Could never pry it out. Naturally, I had to go re-cop. Seriously, how many parties did we just let his joints repeat? We can all rehearse every single smooth verse.
He will be missed greatly.
Rest in Peace.
On a side note, that WRIU tribute is so ill! Thanks for posting it.
