New track by Vast Aire featuring Cappadonna, “I Don’t Care.” Production on this track is on point, nice sample of Ad Rock (I think) saying “I don’t care!” over some brassy instrumentals. I wasn’t crazy about the news that Vast signed with Man Bites Dog Records, but as long as he is able to spit out the two albums he claims he’s able to do, I don’t care who is label is. I just hope Copywrite isn’t littered all over either album. Anywho, download or just peep it below. I’ve been a Vast fan for a minute now and I even tried to fuck with him on the Xbox 360. He’s a real dude who loves sci-fy shit and Hip-Hop. Salute. Watch for his latest album to drop in February 2011, entitled Ox 2011 Street Odyssey.
A day doesn’t pass where Verbal and I don’t disagree with each other. It’s never anything monumental, but more like the epitome of trivial bullshit. A few examples:
Verbal: Chocolate soy milk is kill. Me: Ehh, not so much. Verbal: You’re crazy.
or…
Me: Saw The Tooth Fairy today. Hilarious. Verbal: With da Rock? Me: Geah. Verbal: You’re a gay. Me: Fuck your life. Verbal: Dwayne Johnson doesn’t strike me as a comedic genius. Me: “You can’t handle the tooth.”
and…
Verbal: Copywrite is better now. Me: But he only raps about weed and Asher Roth. Verbal: I like that song with Marco Polo. Me: He was nicer with MHz and EC Records. Verbal: False. He was whiny just like Cage. Me: I’m going to bring this one to TECB and hope someone comments before the end of time. Verbal: Busters.
Exciting, isn’t it? So, TECB-readers, if there are any of you out there, this Copywrite debate can be left up to you. If you know who Copywrite is. And if you’ve heard a good enough percentage of his recordings (1998-present) to give us a decent opinion.
But, first, let me jot down the majority of my thoughts.
Today I busted out Table Scraps, Copywrite’s album with MHz, and his debut solo LP, The High Exhaulted, to see if I still actually enjoyed his older recordings. One thing about this guy that I somehow had forgotten is how much of an misogynistic asshole he is…
Homeboy is so aggressively over the top with his dick-to-vag-talk that, especially in this instance, the seriousness of his narrative is lost and becomes laughable. With that said, Copy’s style has always straddled the thin line between offensive and humorous, and I often tend to appreciate art of such twisted nature.
Moving on. Table Scraps and The High Exhaulted were steady go-to’s back when I was braggadocio-rhyme-obsessed weed-smoking delinquent. And, honestly, after today’s listening, those two albums still contain a number of tracks that will more than likely remain timeless to me. Maybe a little for nostalgia purposes, but mostly because there’s a slew of Copywrite lines/rhyme-structures that continue to impress the shit out of me even ten years after the fact. “Seven Light Years” was one of my favorites…
In 2010, though, Copywrite sounds like a tired version of himself, circa-2000. His rhymes don’t have as much venom and — without RJ, Mighty Mi, and Camu providing 90% of his backdrops — his production choices are barely average, if that. Not to mention this beef with Asher Roth is bordering on desperate. Now that shit is whiny.
