I fell behind in ’09…

Unfortunately, yes I did.  I planned to write quarterly reviews of all the music I had been listening to throughout the year, but I ended up accumulating so many albums that I didn’t even have a chance to listen to them all until the new year had passed.  However, an ass-load of what I did hear was fantastic.  Since I’ve been procrastinating so much on making a post like this, I’m going to try to bang it out as quick as possible.  So, while I may not be thorough in developing some (or any) of my opinions on the releases of 2009, I figure this is better than nothing.  Here goes…

Marco Polo on the remix

Usually I don’t mess around with material that is certain to be popping-up all over the web, but this Marco Polo remix of Diamond District’s “Who I Be” is nice…

The remix from Marco is nice, yes; but the Oddisee-produced original (which you can download for free along with the rest of In The Ruff) is also quite the ear-pleaser.  The kid’s beats are grimier than your grandfather’s grundle.  Peace.

Oddisee

I’ve been down with Oddisee since I was handed the You Don’t Know the Half CD at Scribble Jam ’05.  And, if you’ve had your eyes closed and ears plugged for this past year, the man has been banging-out more projects than you can even imagine.  In the Ruff (download here), Oddisee’s album with his D.C. brethren Diamond District, has been receiving world-wide acclaim and gets the TECB stamp of approval, no doubt.  Mental Liberation, his newest solo effort, also dropped earlier this year, along with a remix of Trek Life’s debut, and three season-themed instrumental installments (get them free here).  Oddisee’s  numerous guest appearances, such as this JR & PH7 collaboration off their LP The Standard (pictured above — dope cover, right?), are also gaining him some much-deserved global recognition…

Oddisee’s work ethic hasn’t been slowing down any, either.  On Tuesday (1/26) he put out Traveling Man, an instrumental album inspired by each city he has traveled through while on tour, and he also plans on producing an entire album with Finale — whose debut album was easily one of my top five from ’09 — slated for a May 25th release.  Sounds like an exciting way to start the summer.  I can’t wait.
