When your friends tell you they’d “rather listen to Regina Spektor make dolphin noises” (see “Folding Chair”) than listen to what’s currently featured on TECB, that means it’s time for me to climb out of my six-feet-under slum of depression and try to make the site a little less shitty. And this is my first attempt.
It’s “G.U.R.U.,” the debut single titled off of Marco Polo’s upcoming sophomore LP, Port Authority 2: The Director’s Cut, featuring Talib Kweli on the mic and DJ Premier on the cuts. I’m over a month late in posting the song, but, hey, I never said I’d be swinging for the fences with my return — just trying to get off the pine and become active again.
Flashback 10 years ago, if you would’ve told me the Demigodz, or at least Apathy and Esoteric, would have tracks produced by Preemo, I would’ve called you a serious homer with lofty aspirations for this quasi-local group of cats. Not only is it awesome, yet tough financially, to be a rap fan right now with both Czarface and KILLmatic on the shelves and on the interwebs, it’s also awesome to be from New England, rooting for the home team.
We, being Chris and I, have watched Apathy and Esoteric (and 7L) since their inception. And now they’re making albums with founding members of Wu Tang and having multiple tracks out that are produced by the God of the Cuts, DJ Premier. We’ve never mistaken ourselves as journalists here at TECB, we’re fans first and foremost, if not solely. I’m proud as hell of Eso and Ap and the whole Demigox … er Demigodz crew. KILLmatic is out now. Go cop it and then cry about being a failed rapper, ya poo butt booty dusters.
I have a couple of friends that have been preaching this kid Joey Bada$$ to me, but I disregarded almost all that I heard from him after I saw A$AP poop on everyone in the BET cypher. Then he linked with Premier. And the track is nice:
But edited. Which is totally not extreme. Mountain Dew is slacking these days.
Download available on the SoundCloud player while it lasts, video supposedly coming up soon.
