One of the many, almost infinite, perks of having your own hippity-hop blog is that you can post whatever the fuck you want. Even if your taller, angrier partner in paragraphs hates it. But more importantly than sweet vindication, we can post things we missed. Take this video for example. Karniege is at his rawest in this flick, “Universal,” as he waxes poetic about the New York way of life he sees everyday. This video dropped back in February but it’s still extremely fresh. Thanos is responsible for the production.
Pretty ironic I came across this joint today (hat tip to Dig Dug) because I was having a conversation about how dope Karniege is with a fellow hip-hop head (and author) on Twitter the past couple of days. The convo started on S.A. Smash which moved to Vast Aire and then Vast and Karneige’s Empire State as Mighty Joseph. Karniege is ridiculously overlooked in my eyes. He paints a lyrical picture as good and even better than most cats. He’s extremely raw and real yet fits perfectly with guys like Vast Aire who rhyme about everything from kung-fu flicks to video games and everything outside and in between.
I’m working on becoming a working stiff again and the daily commute has me revisiting some albums I haven’t spun in a while. Many a Karniege verse was thrown about my Hyundai today. You should be so lucky.
