I fell behind in ’09…

Unfortunately, yes I did.  I planned to write quarterly reviews of all the music I had been listening to throughout the year, but I ended up accumulating so many albums that I didn’t even have a chance to listen to them all until the new year had passed.  However, an ass-load of what I did hear was fantastic.  Since I’ve been procrastinating so much on making a post like this, I’m going to try to bang it out as quick as possible.  So, while I may not be thorough in developing some (or any) of my opinions on the releases of 2009, I figure this is better than nothing.  Here goes…

I like free CD’s. Especially when they’re good.

I’ve probably spent $10,000+ at Newbury Comics over the course of their existence and, as crazy as it sounds, there’s much more to be had if my dreams of building a god-like music collection ever come to fruition.  Anyway, on my last trip to Newbury I didn’t even have to break out the money clip to leave with a CD in hand.  I simply asked the girls behind the counter who was playing on the stereo and they responded with something along these lines:  “It’s Anni Rossi.  We don’t have any more copies of hers in our store.  She’s really great, though.  Why don’t you take this promo copy?”

After the simple but genuine “thank you” I gave in response, I left the store with a free copy of Rockwell in my palm.  As minuscule as this may seem to some, this act of awesomeness truly made my day, especially because I had an obvious interest in hearing more of Rossi’s music.  After I popped the CD in my car’s stereo I did the ritualistic post-CD-getting text message to Verbal and went on my way listening to some interesting new tunes.

Rockwell reminded me a bit of Regina Spektor’s 11:11 — it’s raw, unique, and most certainly not over-produced.  Needless to say, I’m a fan.  Here’s one of the tracks where Rossi, a multi-instrumentalist, gets pretty filthy with her viola…

So, yeah, that’s my story.  It felt good, especially considering most of the free CD’s I’m ever handed are from the slew of shit-bumb local acts.  I’ll probably never get around to making a year in music review for ’09, but this album would definitely show up on the positive side of things if I ever did commit to the writing.  (So many great releases this year, too.  Animal Collective not included.)
